The Animal Hospital of Stuarts Draft offers a vast array of medical and surgical services for both the maintainence of good health and the treatment of an injury or illness.
Vaccinations and Preventative Care
We highly recommend annual physical examinations for heathly adult pets. Our staff carefully follows the guidelines of the American Veterinary Medical Association for vaccinations of dogs and cats. We evaluate the needs of each individual pet to develop the "core" vaccines that they need, based on their lifestyles. We believe in appropriate vaccine protection but do not wish to overwhelm our patients will vaccines that they do not need. We highly recommend regular heartworm testing and stool examinations to protect both your pet and your family. We recommend heartworm prevention year round for all dogs. We also highly recommend using a safe flea and tick medication regularly on all pets. We have many products available at competitive prices that are safer and more effective than over-the counter products.
After your pet reaches his "golden years" (usually around age 8) we recommend bloodwork to evaluate internal organ function. This also establishes a known baseline for your healthy pet and can assist the doctor if your pet becomes ill in the future. We also highly advise physical examinations every 6 months at this age as changes can occur rather quickly.
Surgical Services
Both Dr. Cohron and Dr. Longmire perform surgery, with routine procedures scheduled Mondays through Fridays. All surgical procedures include the administration of pain medication before the procedure as research shows this decreases pain both during the surgery and during the anesthesia recovery period. Dr. Cohron handles most non-routine surgical procedures and has completed additional training in both orthopedic and soft-tissue surgery. She can repair many fractures but severe bone fractures and pelvic fractures are usually referred to specialists at Virginia Tech, Veterinary Referral and Critical Care, or Virginia Veterinary Specialists.
Medical Services
Our doctors believe in complete and prompt medical care for our patients, so our hospital has a complete in-house laboratory, allowing us to determine our patient's blood counts and organ functions within minutes. We also utilize other laboratories across the United States for more specific disease testing.
Dr. Cohron has a special interest in cancer medicine and has treated many canine and feline patients with chemotherapy for various forms of cancer.
Our hospital also offers ultrasound diagnostics, although we are presently limiting these services to just abdominal and reproductive examinations.
Reproductive Services
Dr. Cohron enjoys working with responsible dog breeders and has performed many successful artificial inseminations with fresh, fresh chilled, and frozen semen. Using our ultrasound she can diagnose pregnancies at 21 days. Dr. Cohron works closely with Dr. Cecare at Virginia Tech and has successfully managed several difficult pregnancies. We are well-equipped to work with females but unfortunately at this time, we are not set up to collect and freeze semen.
